The founders of Retford and District Lifesavers Club could never have imagined how far the club has progressed in its 40 years. From humble beginnings in the freezing waters of the Albert Road baths to the marvellous facilities at the Leisure Centre, and now qualification for the World Championships in Australia.
Retford Lions are delighted they are able to support the club in its quest to take 18 members to Gold Coast in August for the competition, They will take part in events such as ocean rescues, pool rescues, competing in a simulated rescue or accident scenarios, in which their management of the situation will be assessed .There will be track events, ocean swims, and much more to test their skills.
The club have a ‘Gofundme’ page, at which donations can be made. Any donations would be appreciated for this prestigious event for the town.
Sunday 14th April saw the now annual ‘Amstel Standing’ cycle ride supported by Retford Lions, which sees cyclist of all abilities, even in fancy dress, take part in a ride around the district over a 70- or 35-mile route.
The event is traditionally ridden on the same day as the Amstel Gold Race in the Netherlands. Lions were present at various checkpoints to deliver water and bananas generously donated by Asda East Retford. Lions wish to thank Dominic Battersby of Bridgegate Cycles for his hard work in organising the event.
