Fine weather and a slight breeze greeted the 40 teams who participated in the Retford Lions Ted Waterfield Memorial Golf Tournament held on 13th July at Retford Golf Club. The first team teed off at 9.00am prompt, called to the tee and announced by Lion Pete Masters (MJF), who has been the organiser of the day for many years.
Sponsorship of the holes and generous gifts by many local companies swelled the amount which was promised to two charities. This year the recipients were Bassetlaw Hospice and the RNLI. The highly contested day was eventually won by the following teams:
- Gents: Ian Bennett, Jason Whitfield, Andrew Rossington, and Daryl Rose. The team finished on 100 points.
- Ladies: Barbara Burton, Pam Whitfield, Kyser Gill, and Karen Pollard. The team finished on 89 points.
- Mixed: S O’Shea, C O’Shea, J Hilton, P Hilton. The team finished on 96 points.
- Nearest the pin: Harry Fitzakerly (4ft 3ins).
One of the highlights of the day was a hole in one on the 9th hole by Charles Daysh. Other fundraising was held on the day raising a staggering £6,000 for the charities.
Of course, these events only succeed with the help of staff and volunteers. Lions wish to thank Diane and Nicki, of the backroom staff at the Golf Club, and Craig, who all did tremendous work throughout the day. They also wish to thank Debbie from the Hospice fundraising team, whose cheerful demeanour kept spirits up.
The presentation evening at the Golf Club was on 10th August where representatives from the charities received cheques; report to follow.
