Retford Lions Club

As the sound of the Merlin-engined Spitfire disappeared into the distance, the Lions reflected on a wonderful return of Charter Day. Lions were out early erecting tents, and ensuring all ducks were present and correct. They were released in the usual manner, and cheered home by large crowds. The Lions wish to thank everyone who made the day special. From the organisers to the canoe club who fished out the ducks, and particularly the public, and local businesses, who dug deep to buy a duck for the race.

The winners of the Lions’ red duck race were Riverside Health Centre in Retford. They nominated a charity called ‘Scotty’s Little Soldiers’ to receive the £1,000 donation. This organisation supports children orphaned by war.

Charter Day is one of Lions’ biggest days of the year for fundraising, but as usual they are looking forward for their next major event: a Charity Golf Day on Wednesday 13th July at Retford Golf Club. Holes in the event are sponsored by local businesses and there are up to 40 teams entered. This year the proceeds of the day will go to Bassetlaw Hospice and the R.N.L.I.

One of the events away from the town which Lions support is the annual Disabled Sports Day at Doncaster. This is an event organised by Lions of other districts and takes place on 6th August at Sandall Park. Participants are welcomed from Retford and district to a wonderful day.

On Sunday 29th May, the Lions are starting their popular Car Boot Sale at Retford Cricket Club. There is no need to book, just turn up on the day. The sales will continue on the last Sunday in the month until September. The charge is £5.00 per car, so take this opportunity to clean out the cupboards and get rid of the items which are cluttering your homes!
