One of the key events in the Retford Lions calendar is the annual ‘Tour de Retford’ cycling event, this year taking place on Sunday 17th April.
It is a non-competitive event covering two distance routes of 35 and 70 miles. Also called ‘Amstel Standing’, it is traditionally held on the same day as the ‘Amstel Gold’ race held in the Netherlands, and attracts entries from all over the UK, as well as local enthusiasts.
The proprietor of Bridgegate cycles Dominic Battersby, together with his sister Ruth, started the event in 2016 in aid of Retford Lions Club. Members of the club volunteer on the day, helping with registration and performing marshalling duties on the route and manning feed stations. The highlight of the day is the mass start in the marketplace.
Members of the public are invited to take part and there is a prize for the best outfit on the day. Registration is at 8.00am in the market square.

The Lions are pleased to report that the distribution of Jack Knowles book ‘Positive Pea’ is going well. Lions funded the project, which is promoted and distributed by Retford’s Vicky Waring and Jack visiting local schools. Vicky reported that the books, which tackle the subject of mental wellbeing, are being well received, with some schools setting up their own initiatives such as a walk and talk groups. The Lions hope to continue their support in the coming year.
