Retford Inner Wheel Club would like to begin the New Year by thanking all the local people who have supported the club in many different ways through 2019. All over Britain, Inner Wheel clubs have worked in the last year to support many varied charities and needy causes. In Retford, Alzheimer’s Research was their main charity and secondly Medical Detection/Alert Dogs. They also gave help to The Air Ambulance, Meningitis Trust, the British Legion, Leonard Cheshire Homes, the Rotary Disaster Fund, Santa for a Senior and Women’s Aid (The Women’s Refuge). They continue to help the food bank with donations of food and money. All this was possible because of the service of club members and with the help of local people.
In the last year Inner Wheel clubs have provided tools for self reliance, to assist tailoring skills; sent out literacy boxes for education; they have made heart cushions to support women with breast cancer after surgery; In supporting Guide Dogs for the Blind, one club awarded a lifetime membership to Gismo, a Labrador guide dog who has attended each meeting and event with his owner and keeps her safe at all times as well as being a friendly greeter of every member and visitor. These are just a few examples of Inner Wheel’s work in our region.
The club have an ongoing project to give help to ‘Period Poverty’ in the UK. They were happy to participate in the Christmas tree festival at St Swithun’s with a ‘Toy Bag’ themed tree and Grove Street Methodist Church star festival. Their Christmas Market stall raised about £300 for flood victims in Bassetlaw. Retford club’s efforts through 2019 raised over £2,500 for the above charities. Thank you for your support. The club wishes all readers a very happy New Year.
