Retford Historical and Archaeology Society

The meeting of Retford Historical and Archaeology Society on Wednesday 9th January heard Andy Gaunt give a detailed talk and Powerpoint presentation on The Battle of Hatfield and St Edwin’s Chapel. King Edwin may not be a household name like Richard III but he came to a bloody end just the same. There have been clues that, at the time of the battle, the Cuckney area was known as Hatfield, while nearby Edwinstowe means Edwin’s resting place.

Society members enjoyed a visit by Derek Adam in February, with his talk on ‘The Portland Collection’. You can read more in next month’s Retford Life magazine. At their next meeting on Wednesday 13th March, Sara Woodall will be giving a talk entitled ‘Voices from the Trunk’. They meet at Chapelgate Hall situated behind Grove Street Methodist Church Retford at 7.30pm. Visitors are most welcome and can pay £2.00 on the night.
