Retford Cricket Club is back and playing outdoor cricket at all levels – Seniors, Ladies and Juniors from U9s upwards, all made up of players from a wide range of personal backgrounds and supported by the many willing volunteers.

Their Club and 1st team Captain epitomises the family link which is so important to the Club. A local, Nathan (or Nath) follows in his dad’s footsteps, having spent about eight years as 1st Team Vice Captain, and can’t remember a time not playing cricket. His Grandad and Uncle also played while his Mum and Nan were tea-ladies.

Despite now living in Sheffield, at 28 he has said: “Retford is the only club I’ve ever played for, and hopefully the only one I will.” He calls the Club his second home, having played with them for over 20 years.

His most memorable occasion was the 2012 season. “It was a great season for many reasons, with Dad as Captain and a lot of the team being lads my age, I’d grown up playing cricket with, all playing 1st team cricket – we finished third!” he said. His highlights include his 1st team debut at 15 and “being part of the team that got us from Div 3 back to the Championship.”

Nath added: “The stability of the Club from top to bottom is the best we’ve had in over a decade, and with all the improvements to the club and the amount of players and juniors we have, that is only going to get stronger.” His aspirations include the team playing in the Notts Premier leagues.

Nath holds a 1st class degree in Coaching and Sport Development from Manchester Metropolitan University.
