Retford Civic Society

In 2020 Retford Civic Society is celebrating 30 years of working to monitor, protect and improve Retford for present and future generations. This voluntary society is proud to have worked in partnership with Bassetlaw District Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and funding organisations to have initiated and managed projects such as Dyers Court, the Sheep Fair Mural, Carolgate Flower Sculpture and the Canal Mural in recent years.

Heritage Open Day and Retford in Bloom are now annual events which, unfortunately, cannot be enjoyed in the same way this year. Visits by coach to places of interest have had to be postponed and meetings cancelled.

However, thanks to Zoom, the Retford Civic Society committee are still meeting and progress is being made. Since March the Pawnbroker’s Sign on Carolgate has been renovated and replaced, the Chesterfield Canal sign is completed and some Victorian street signage is being repainted.

The society is contacting members with a fortnightly news-sheet and new ideas are being developed to ensure all can contribute and take part in future planning.
