Retford Art Society enjoyed an excellent spring and early summer with the exhibition in St Swithun’s. The People’s Prize for best picture was won jointly by Margaret Presley and Alan Hazard, sharing the £100 prize!

The Society studio, the Swan Studio, which is above Bike Pedlars cycle shop in Carolgate, Retford, hosted four courses in watercolour during the autumn of 2022 and these were very enjoyable – all the more so because they were the first real events of the Society since Covid.

The first paint out day of 2023 was on Osberton estate painting the bluebells, with the second at Creswell Crags on 13th July. A further day is scheduled for 22nd August at Idle Valley (10.00am meetup). These outdoor events are free to all, so go along and have a chat, sketch and a coffee.

Three demonstrations by renowned local artists Helen Tucker and Graham Laughton have also taken place this year. The latest was by Stephen Grey, finalist in the Sky Portrait Artist of the year, and more are scheduled for the autumn.

The next Workshop is with Karin Kristenson (ink and watercolour landscape) on 30th September and is open to members and non-members. Early booking is advised; call 01777 248285.

Life drawing is taking an August break and starting up again on 13th September, 7.00pm at Swan Studio.

The Saturday morning kids club seven to 11 years finished with a tribute to Van Gogh and starts again on 23rd September. Limited spaces are available.

The Swan Studio continues to open Tuesday (7.00pm) and Friday (2.00pm) for open sessions free to all. £1.00 donation for tea, coffee and biscuits.

The next exhibition starts in October and is open to members only, but you can join the Society for half price – just £15.00 – on this special launch occasion. Contact Retfordartsociety@yahoo.com for more information.
