The Retford and District Branch of the Royal British Legion has had a busy summer, marking the 80th anniversaries of VE Day in May and VJ Day in August. Both occasions were commemorated with well-attended services around the War Memorial in the Market Square, followed by refreshments. The VJ80 cake was cut by local veteran Ken Hoddy.
Thanks to committee member Betty Bemment, the branch has now been able to purchase a fourth bench for the War Memorial – a fitting tribute to her late husband, who served as branch treasurer.
The annual Poppy Appeal is already in full swing, with poppies available at the usual outlets in town and in the surrounding villages. The appeal launched on Thursday 23rd October and will run until Tuesday 11th November. The continued generosity of local residents is vital to support the welfare of veterans and their families.
Remembrance Sunday falls on Sunday 9th November, when all are invited to join the service at the War Memorial. Proceedings will begin at 10.45am and will include veterans, cadets and other
uniformed youth groups. Everyone is welcome to attend and to join the nation in remembering those who have served, particularly those who did not return home. A further service of remembrance will take place on Armistice Day, Tuesday 11th November, also beginning at 10.45am.
For the first time this year, there will be a Field of Remembrance at St Swithun’s Church, East Retford, where members of the public can place poppy crosses in a specially designated area throughout the remembrance period. Another new initiative is the Armed Forces Community Christmas Lunch, to be held at The Well, Hospital Road, on Wednesday 17th December from 12.00pm. The invitation is open to the Armed Forces community – serving personnel, reservists, veterans and a guest – as well as branch members who have supported the Legion throughout the year.
The timings for this event are:
- 12.00pm: Veterans and guests arrive
- 12.15pm: Welcome drink will be served – A variety of non-alcoholic drink and soft drinks will be available
- 12.45pm: Lunch is served
- 2.15pm to 3.30pm: Entertainment
- 3.45pm to 4.15pm: Guests depart
Please note this is a complimentary event for the Armed Forces community, guests and branch members. Transport will be provided for those attending who are less able or have mobility issues, do not have their own transport or live in the rural areas. Veterans, guests and members in the Retford area are asked to make their own way to the Well if possible and car share as much as possible.
To reserve a place, contact Ann Hickman on 01777 818993 or 07377 794790 by Thursday 27th November.
