There will be a festive theme to the next talk for Retford and District Historical and Archaeological Society on Wednesday 10th December, when speaker Jan Reade explores how Christmas has been celebrated from medieval times to the present day.
Many of today’s much-loved traditions, such as Christmas cards, crackers and decorated trees, date from the Victorian era, but Jan will also reveal how the English Civil War helped shape Christmas festivities and how customs from other cultures have influenced the way we celebrate.
To round off the evening, festive snacks – including mince pies – will be served after the talk.
The meeting begins at 7.30pm at Grove Street Methodist Church, Retford. Everyone is welcome; admission for non-members is £3.00.
