Retford and District Historical and Archaeological Society will meet on Wednesday 9th April, when David Templeman will give a talk entitled ‘Two Queens and a Countess’. He will offer a new perspective on the relationships between Elizabeth I, Mary, Queen of Scots, and Bess of Hardwick. These extraordinary, iconic women wielded power in an age predominantly controlled by men. They also have local connections – Mary spent time as a prisoner at Sheffield Manor, while Bess lived at Chatsworth and built the magnificent Hardwick Hall, which remains open to visitors today.
The meeting starts at 7.30pm and will be held in Chapelgate Hall, situated behind Grove Street Methodist Church. Everyone is welcome, and non-members are charged £3.00 per meeting.
On Wednesday 7th May, the society is also hosting an evening with Angus Ashworth, the Yorkshire auctioneer. He will be familiar to audiences of The Yorkshire Auction House and Antiques Road Trip.
Angus has a passion for antiques and has accumulated a wealth of stories and insights from his time in the auction and antiques business, which he will share with the audience. This promises to be an entertaining and informative evening.
The lecture will be held at Grove Street Methodist Church at 7.30pm. Admission is £8.00, and tickets can be purchased in advance from Retford Arts Hub in Churchgate.
