Remembering the fallen and other interesting stuff

by | 9 January 2023 | Children's Group, Retford

7th Retford (St Swithun’s) Scout Group, Cannon Choughs ESU and 1st Clarborough Scout Group attended the Remembrance Service held in Retford Market Square on Sunday 13th November.

Retford’s weekly sessions started with fireworks, hot dogs and marshmallows on 2nd and 3rd November. Also in November, the Beavers made some poppy pictures and talked about Remembrance, while Scouts and Cubs visited the Cenotaph in the Market Square. Beavers also had lots of fun making armpit fudge, Cubs made bird feeders and learnt how to tie a reef knot and Scouts planned the menu for a weekend camp and had fun making war time stew. This consisted of mince (or plant based mince) and whatever vegetables they wished to put in, that traditionally could have been grown in their own gardens in the war time.

The group had a tree St Swithun’s Tree Festival with decorations made by Beavers and Cubs, who used glitter glue to decorate pine cones. They also had a fundraising stall on Retford Christmas Market and they would like to thank everyone who supported their stall.

On Monday 28th November the Beavers, Cubs and lots of adults visited the St Swithun’s Christmas Tree Festival. Scouts on 30th November had a noisy ‘try-it’ music session with a variety of instruments for them to try.

Explorers have continued to meet on Sunday evenings and have welcomed some new members to the unit. If you are aged between 13.5 years old and up to 18, please get in touch with Matt Ward for more information about the group via email – matt.ward@bassetlawscouts.org.uk. Scout Network is for those aged 18 to 25 years old. This arranged at a county level but Matt can put you in touch with the relevant people.

If any over 18s are keen to find out more about volunteering, please do get in touch. They can offer a variety of roles on a weekly basis, or on an occasional basis. Do you have a skill that would be of interest to their young people? For any enquiries for a place in the Scout Group, please contact Hazel Newstead, Group Scout Leader, by email 7thretford@gmail.com or phone 01777 704835.
