Want answers? Google it! However, there are a vast array of techniques used by professional researchers to home-in on the required answers. At Clarborough and Welham IT Group tutors not only provide help and guidance to help solve tricky questions, but also provide a massive, free, bundle of more than 100 worksheets (their Workbooks package) to all members which contains a detailed tutorial on advanced Google searching.
Just one slightly amusing example will suffice here. A recent request was to research vintage Triumph Herald cars. The surprise came when this was entered into Google and the ‘hits’ list included not only the motor vehicles information requested but also lots of data about various ‘Herald’ newspapers and vast amount of ladies’ underwear! The reason? Google searches for each individual word when a question is entered like this. However, simply enclosing “triumph herald cars” (capitals usually don’t matter) in speech marks like this forces Google to return only those hits with this exact phrase. This is just one example of a simple Google tool — there are dozens!
