Have you read the story of Bullet the Buzzard in this edition? The local group of the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust would urge you to have a look at this inspirational article. Although there are people who don’t care about wildlife and regard it merely as a resource for entertainment (which is what seems to have happened in Bullet’s case), there are many people like Geoff Garratt – people who do their best to rescue and rehabilitate animals that have been victims of cruelty, accident or misfortune.
Geoff is a local wildlife hero and his work – and that of others like him – should be celebrated not just because it is humane, but because of its potential impact on species numbers. As Janet Peto of Hedgehog Welfare said: “Every sick of injured hedgehog treated and returned to the wild is another small addition to the chances of the species recovering from the catastrophic decline in numbers we have seen in recent years.”
It is to be hoped that we can share more stories of wildlife heroes from the North Nottinghamshire Local Group of the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.
