Church Bell Ringing in Ordsall
August celebrates 130 years of the three smaller bells at All Hallows Church. The treble, second and third bells were cast by John Taylor and Co, Bell Founders at Loughborough, in 1892 and the fourth bell, which was the previous treble, had to be recast at this time too. The fourth bell in 1892 was estimated to be three to four hundred years old, so this bell is most definitely the oldest in the tower.
The fifth bell was cast in 1741 and the Tenor in 1661. There are six bells at Ordsall and the ringing team is made up of some ringers from Ordsall, and ringers from the church at West Retford. The team needs more ringers and will be very happy to show anyone who is interested how the ancient art of campanology is done. Currently the youngest ringer is just ten years old; can that be beaten?
Anyone interested in giving bell ringing a go, or interested in how it is done, please phone All Hallows Church on 01777 702515.
