The Wonder of Willow
September marks the start of a new season of talks at Idle Valley Nature Reserve in Retford, with the North Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust Local Group ready to deliver an interesting and varied programme. Focusing on wildlife in the local area, the talks aim to familiarise people with what is happening to nature on their doorstep.
The first speaker will be Tim Sexton, a familiar face at Idle Valley where he once worked and conducted research on willow. As Tim says, his talk is “directly relevant to our area”. He adds: “People are often surprised at the importance of the willow tree for wildlife, in particular the vast diversity of insects which are associated with the willow – which can be as many as are found on oak.” Tim’s talk will focus mainly on willow trees at Attenborough Nature Reserve, where he spent a year studying the many species that depend on them. It will also cover the history of commercial willow growth in the Trent Valley, along with some of the incredible species discovered during his research. Tim is an excellent speaker and this talk is not to be missed. The meeting will be held at Idle Valley Centre at 7.15pm on Thursday 11th September. Entry is £3.00, which includes tea and biscuits.
