The first meeting of North Notts Association of National Trust Members of the new year took place at The Crossing in January, when speaker Dr Martin Ellerby talked about his life in music – an interesting and informative talk that was enjoyed by members and guests. He talked about being born in Worksop, covered his career from becoming a student in London, then on to world-wide activities all based in music, including becoming a Composer in Residence and conductor of choirs, particularly youth choirs. He is now based in Manchester as Professor at the Royal Northern College.
He played a selection of his compositions, particularly for instrumental groups, showing a wide range of his styles. He is now widely involved in commissions from choral groups, including the local Ryton Chorale, from which some members were in the audience.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 16th March, where speaker Susan Deal will talk on the subject of ‘The Portland Druce Exhumation’. This explores the existence of two men: William John Cavendish Bentinck, 5th Duke of Portland, eccentric and reclusive bachelor; and Thomas Charles Druce, proprietor of the Baker Street Bazaar, husband and father. Or were they one and the same man? A major scandal of the later 19th century, a story of insanity, underground tunnels, fake funerals and exhumation. A mystery to spark your interest!
All meetings are held at The Crossing, Newcastle Street, Worksop on the third Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm. Visitors and new members are always welcome and the fee for each meeting is £6.00. Membership is £30.00 single, or £55.00 joint and covers seven talks from October to April. There are also five visits from May to September which are priced separately.
