Gardens throughout Retford are now bursting with colour as we move through the summer season. It is also the time when plans for this year’s Retford in Bloom competition finally see the light of day and everyone within the town is encouraged to work towards the show, that always illuminates Retford, with floral delights during the summer months.
The annual display never fails to cheer up even the darkest day and makes life pleasant for all who live, work or visit Retford. A visit to Kings’ Park at any time of the year is a rewarding experience and Bassetlaw District Council are sure to provide us with wonderful displays throughout the summer. Yet it is the floral displays provided by individuals, which will be judged and rewarded by the Retford in Bloom panel.
This year the competition will be judged in late July/early August, with the presentation ceremony taking place, as usual, in the Town Hall on Wednesday 19th September at 7.00pm — a date for your diary!
Nominations or entries are sought from members of the public for inclusion in the following categories:
- Best front garden
- Best floral shop/business front
- Best public house display
- Best Community Environmental Project
- Primary School and Secondary School — Schools may submit any gardening or growing project they are involved in and/or they can take part in the potato growing competition.
This is your chance to reward all those who brighten up our lives by bringing colour to our town. Next time you stop to admire a garden as you pass it by, make a note of the address and when you get home put pen to paper! Entries are limited to those within the boundaries of the town and may be made by completing an entry form — collect and return to The Hub on Cannon Square or the Denman Library. Entries should be received as soon as possible, with the deadline being Saturday 14th July. You could also place your nominations by calling Derek Turner (this year’s coordinator of Retford in Bloom) on 01777 702929 or simply email your choice(s) to retfordcivicsociety@hotmail.co.uk, entitling your email ‘Retford in Bloom’.
You could even nominate yourself or a member of your family! Don’t forget to look out for the results which will be published after the Presentation Evening in September.
