News from the museums of Tuxford

In March thoughts turn to Mothering Sunday which had its origin in the middle ages when children who had left home to work in service were allowed to go home to visit their mother church and family. As they excitedly looked forward to rare time off they would pick flowers along the way.

The Walks of Life Museum’s natural landscape is ideal for the daffodil and they are looking forward to seeing the first daffodils appearing. The Museum has the original Victorian flower seller’s cart on display in their collection.

Mothering Sunday was also the day that people who could afford a pram dressed their babies in their Sunday best, mothers showed off their finest clothing and hats or sent their nannies out to show off their attractive child and wealth in the spring sunshine. The Museum also has a timeline and display of prams.

The Walks of Life Museum is busy getting ready for its events this year, starting with craft fairs on the first Saturday of the month from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Saturday 25th March is the auction with opportunities for the public to sell their unwanted items. Their volunteers have been going to visit schools and groups and look forward to welcoming artists and photographers. They will also be planning more of their popular historical talks.
