There was a good attendance at Beckingham Bowls Club’s Annual General Meeting held in the Beckingham Recreation Room on 31st January. Reports for 2019 were received from the treasurer, team captains, head groundsman and club captain, with their Open Pairs and Presentation Evening being particularly enjoyable and successful.
Due to the continuing high expenditure having to be incurred on maintaining and running the bowling green site, the club were unable to add to the funds built up last year for the replacement of their tea room/store and refreshment area. After the reports, officers were elected and dates were fixed for this year’s playing and social events, starting with the club’s Annual Lunch to be held on Sunday 15th March at Thonock Golf Club.
They will continue with their club individual competitions and their popular Open Pairs Gala Day will be held on Sunday 19th July. They close their events for 2020 with their Presentation Evening, to be held on 2nd October, and members also attend the Gainsborough Bowls League Presentation Evening, also in October.
Members were briefed on the discussions that had taken place with representatives of the Village Hall Management Committee in an attempt to reach a mutually acceptable agreement to secure the future of the Bowls Club in Beckingham. Several other matters were discussed, including fundraising and grant applications, to formulate their plans for an enjoyable year of playing bowls, alongside the social activities and green maintenance which have played a big part in the success of the club.
Although they have a relatively healthy membership, they do need new members of all ages to help them maintain the bowls facility for Beckingham in the future, and any new members, with or without bowling experience, would be warmly welcomed. Their green opens for the season on Thursday 23rd April, so please call Roger on 01427 848628 to find out more.
