Mercian Archaeological Services CIC have announced an archaeological excavation opportunity at King John’s Palace from Monday 7th to Friday 11th October. You can book your place at The cost is £40.00 per person per day, or £175.00 for the full five days. This is a rare opportunity to excavate at the site of the legendary King John’s Palace in Sherwood Forest. King John’s Palace was once the Royal Heart of Sherwood Forest.
The Palace was visited by all eight kings from Henry II to Richard II, with King John possibly holding Parliament there in the early 13th century and Edward I, holding Parliament there in 1290.
This project forms part of a long running research project designed to understand the extent of the medieval palace, and surrounding area. Please note it is not a field school, so there will be no presentations, lectures or training sessions.
You will take part in the dig, and when required also have a chance to undertake drawing, finds processing and other aspects of excavation — all under supervision from Mercian and no experience is necessary. All levels are welcome from beginner to expert! For further information about this exciting project, please email Andy at
