Margaret’s Story – from stray to safe

by | 2 December 2025 | Community Focus, Local Charity, Pride, Retford

Late in September, Babworth Animal Rescue Kennels (BARK) was contacted by a local vet asking for help with an injured stray cat brought in by a kind member of the public. The poor cat had an open wound where her front leg had become trapped through her collar, cutting deeply into her skin. With no microchip or owner found, the rescue accepted her and named her Margaret.

Margaret quickly settled in, enjoying cuddles, good food, and a soft bed. Despite antibiotics and careful treatment, her injury isn’t healing well and she now needs an operation to clean and stitch the wound. The estimated cost of her treatment is £600, and BARK is appealing for help to cover the cost. Donations towards Margaret’s vet fees can be made in person at the BARK Shop in Tuxford, or by calling Park Hall Vets in Mansfield Woodhouse on 01623 620784. Simply ask to make a donation by card over the phone to the Babworth Rescue Account and they will do the rest.

Keep your cat safe – always use safety-release collars. These collars unclip if they snag or tighten, preventing serious injuries like Margaret’s. Safety collars are available from the fundraising BARK Shop in Tuxford. If you find an injured cat or a litter of kittens out of hours, approach with care. If the animal is calm, gently contain it in a cardboard box lined with a soft, non-knitted blanket. Keep it warm and quiet, and offer a little warm, boiled water until you can get professional help from a vet. Do not offer cow’s milk, as it can cause stomach upsets. If the cat is frightened or aggressive, don’t risk handling it; call a vet and ask for advice.

Every act of kindness – from a call to a vet, a shop visit, or a small donation – helps turn moments of suffering into stories of care and recovery. Together, our community gives animals like Margaret a second chance. Donations can be dropped off at the BARK Fundraising Shop, next to the Post Office on Eldon Street, Tuxford (Monday to Saturday, 9.00am to 4.00pm), or directly at BARK Kennels, Babworth Crossing, DN22 8HE (daily 9.00am to 3.00pm).
