During February, lots of badge work was undertaken at 7th Retford Scout Group, including some done at the camp in Cleethorpes.
The Scouts started their Art activity badge, made bridges from art straws and challenged themselves with electronic quiz boards. Cubs made towers from art straws and tested their different senses. All sections enjoyed cooking and eating pancakes. The most difficult decision was which topping to have on their pancake!
Helen Saville from Wonderland Bookshop (on Carolgate, Retford) visited both the Cubs and Beavers and both sections worked towards their Book Reader badge. Helen also gave each child a World Book Day book and bookmark for them to take home and enjoy. Several of the Cubs have sent in a list of six books they have read themselves and this completes their badge. The Cubs had a very engaging discussion about various children’s authors.
Also this term, lots of the Cubs have taken part in Young Voices at Sheffield Arena with their various schools. They had already taken part in various shows running up to Christmas so have now completed their Entertainer’s Badge.
Some of the local primary schools (including Bracken Lane, Thrumpton and Ordsall) had asked their Scouting and Guiding members to attend school in their uniform on 22nd February. Lord Robert Baden Powell, Founder of Scouting, and his sister Agnes, Founder of Guiding, both had their birthday on 22nd February and the groups remember their work.
Looking ahead, on Sunday 23rd April Scouting and Guiding will be coming together to celebrate St George, the Patron Saint of England and of Scouting. There will be a parade led by Mansfield and District Corp of Drums through Retford town centre (starting near West Street / Carolgate junction at 2.15pm) and a service for members in East Retford church.
