Local artist on display at Retford Hub

Retired local art teacher Derrick Spence, is to have an exhibition of animal artwork at The Hub in Cannon Square. Derrick was formerly an art teacher at three local schools, Sir Frederick Milner Boys Secondary, King Edward VI and Retford Oaks.

This will be his first exhibition for some years; he is delighted to have the opportunity to display his skills at The Hub. He has chosen to exhibit animal drawings and paintings, having recently joined the Association of Animal Artists. Derrick works mainly in pen and ink for his animal drawings, but also uses pencil and pastel, depending on the subject matter. The pen and ink originals are then copied, and he applies a watercolour wash on the copy for a coloured version. “I use this method, as the person who receives the picture has both a black and white original drawing and an original colour-washed print.” He is currently beginning to use oils again as retirement allows him the time to use this medium once more.

The exhibition will be open to the public from 14th April to 19th May. Derrick will be working in the exhibition area on some mornings should you wish to see him at work.
