Members of 7th Retford Scout Group have enjoyed a busy spring with engaging activities, learning opportunities and community events across April and May.

New arrivals at Idle Valley Farm

On Wednesday 10th April, members, siblings and parents visited Idle Valley Nature Reserve. After a health and safety briefing, the group entered the barns where Mr Bower, the farmer, explained how ewes typically only feed two lambs, with the third of any triplets bottle-fed or fostered. Children were delighted to feed two hungry lambs themselves.

Excitement mounted when another ewe went into labour. The group watched as a lamb was born and took its first steps under the care of its mother – an unforgettable and educational experience. The barn was full of pens, each housing ewes and their newborns of different colours, sizes and even horn types.

Day trip to Lincoln by train

On Sunday 14th April, Scouts travelled by train to Lincoln. Community Railway Officer Helen Saville, who had earlier led a session on rail safety and etiquette, joined them and tested their knowledge en route. After climbing Steep Hill, the group explored the Museum of Lincolnshire Life, completing a heritage-themed quiz along the way.

Exploring traditions and celebrating St George

On Tuesday 16th April, Scouts explored other faiths by sharing a simplified Passover meal – part of the World Challenge badge.
Scouts also created cardboard ‘dragon robots’ on Tuesday 23rd April, followed by an outdoor ‘robot wars’ game. Cubs, the following day, dressed as St George in team relays.

On Saturday 27th April, the entire group – including Squirrel Scouts, Beaver Scouts, Cubs, Scouts, Explorer Scouts and adult volunteers – paraded through Retford to celebrate St George’s Day. Paul Cookson, the Retford Town Crier, led the announcement, with Mansfield and District Corps of Drums providing music. Groups from East Markham, Askham, Tuxford, Ranskill and local Guides also took part. Canon Dick Lewis delivered a child-friendly church service.

Spring Bank Holiday Summer Camp

The group’s Summer Camp took place from Friday 2nd to Monday 5th May. With members ranging from age six to adult leaders, the weekend was full of fun, learning and teamwork. Seven adults and two Young Leaders supported the camp, including four new adult volunteers. Everyone quickly pulled together to deliver a successful event.

Young people were split into three daytime teams, taking part in activities suited to their age. On Sunday, the group enjoyed a walk that included a spontaneous stop at a local play park. Monday’s highlight was exploring the CaveBus – enjoyed equally by young people and volunteers.

Thanks were extended to Mark, Jon, Charlotte and Neil for taking the leap into volunteering, and to regular helpers Chris and Ben. Young Leaders Aaron and Matt were also commended for their vital support. Although the Group Leader could not attend in person due to illness, she remained closely involved throughout the weekend.

Join the adventure

The group continues to plan exciting summer activities. Children aged four and up are welcome to join, with no upper age limit. Adults over 18 interested in volunteering must complete a DBS check and initial training.
