Keeping safe is an important life skill

7th Retford Cubs and Scouts have been learning skills to keep them safe and to be able to help other people. They had an Emergency Aid session, watched a video about the Mountain Rescue service, discussed the equipment needed for hikes and considering different sorts of weather. The Cubs looked at the Country Code. Both groups thought about how our leisure activities affect the environment, looking at reports and photographs taken in the Snowdonia area back in August 2021.

Cubs had a noisy but fun session using different musical instruments including drums, electric guitar, xylophones, shakers etc. One of the Cub parents was invited to come and share her knowledge of Makaton; Emma works at St Giles School and, with her help, the Cubs learned to sign ‘He’s got the whole world in his hands’.

For Mothers’ Day both Cubs and Scouts made some flowers using Dip It Fantasy Film. They took them home at the end of the session. Beavers made some beautiful clay plaques for the mums or grandparents in their life. They moulded the clay at one session, left them to dry and then painted them the following week. They also had chance to use the rest of the clay to make something else of their own choice.

The Scouts finally got to race their sedan chairs made earlier in the term. It was funny in the dark trying to race each other. Explorers had an evening hike on the Cuckoo Way and have been busy completing badge work, including Pioneer, Chef, Navigation, and Emergency Aid over the Spring Term.
