January at 7th Retford (St Swithun’s) Scout Group

7th Retford’s Beavers had a games session to start 2024. They’ve also recently completed the Air Activities Stage 1 badge, attempted to build the tallest tower with Jenga blocks, learned how to pitch a small hike tent, talked about what they would take to camp and also learnt the points of the compass.

There is space for new Beavers as some are moving up to Cubs now.

The Cubs have already had lots going on, including a games night and work on the Navigator staged badge and Emergency Aid staged badges, most achieving Emergency Aid Stage 2, as well as a teamwork session. Cubs joined in with an online ‘Draw-along’ with Wonderland Bookshop with Jamie Smart, author of ‘Bunny vs Monkey’. Thank you to Helen Saville for facilitating this; it was an amazing success and very enjoyable.

On Saturday 20th January, the Cubs entered a full team in the NESST Cub Ramble at Walesby Forest Activity Centre. The team included two Beavers who are moving up to Cubs. Apart from a little bit of mud, it was a lovely afternoon walk. Tom Ward, who organised this county-wide event, started his Scouting journey at 7th Retford.

Scouts also reopened with a ‘bring a game’ session. This was followed by an Emergency Aid session, an evening making energy bars – lots of mess, but lots of fun – and a quiz around town. Four Scouts took part in the NESST Short Challenge Hike, accompanied by the Scout Leader, Kenny, a Dad and a Granny. They all did very well completing their walk in the wee small hours.

For more information about joining 7th Retford Scout Group, please email 7thretford@gmail.com. The minimum age is 5¾ years old up to 14.

At the moment the group does not have a Squirrel Drey but would look into starting one with sufficient interest. This is for 4-5 year olds.

They would welcome any new adult volunteers. If that or any other section would be of any interest, please email as above.
