The Grove Women’s Institute met on Thursday 17th July at Hallcroft Community Centre and enjoyed an excellent presentation from guest speaker Richard Kubon, a retired police officer.
The subject was a particularly important and worrying one in today’s society – fraud, protection and prevention.
Richard gave an in-depth account of the many types of fraudulent scams that are prevalent now we are part of an online society, and the many ways scammers try to trick people into parting with their money.
Sound prevention advice was given on how to recognise scams and fraudulent approaches, how not to fall prey to scammers’ traps, and what action to take if targeted. The information was not designed to frighten, but to encourage everyone to be mindful and particularly careful when sharing personal information.
The talk generated many questions from members, each of whom received a useful booklet to take home. Tea, coffee and biscuits were enjoyed while remaining WI business concluded the meeting. Members found it to be a very informative and enjoyable afternoon.
Future meetings are planned with a host of different activities and more guest speakers on interesting subjects.
