Grove WI – Back to the 60s

The Grove Women’s Institute, which met on Thursday 19th June at Hallcroft Community Centre, enjoyed a return visit from guest speakers Paul and Janet Barrass. This was the third time the husband-and-wife team had entertained the Grove WI.

This time, their theme was ‘The Swinging Sixties’. Their extensive knowledge on the subject was delivered with humour and nostalgia. Janet Barrass spoke about the new fabrics and fashions introduced during the 60s – notably Crimplene! There were fond memories of Crimplene dresses and skirts, as well as brushed nylon nightdresses, which often clung to the skin with static.

A table of 60s memorabilia prompted the phrase, ‘I remember that!’ time and again. One highlight was a pair of high-heeled, knee-high white boots. Janet said she had never found a lady they would fit – until now, when one of the ladies in attendance tried them on and declared them very comfortable. Cinderella, eat your heart out!
There was plenty of singing along to Elvis Presley songs, and Paul’s humorous poems and cheeky quips kept everyone smiling and laughing throughout.

Grove WI were joined on this occasion by guests from nearby groups in Clarborough and Ranskill and Torworth.
The afternoon concluded with tea, homemade cakes and a raffle, followed by a small amount of WI business. Members and visitors alike agreed it had been a very enjoyable event.

Future meetings will include a host of activities and guest speakers on a range of interesting topics. Grove WI is actively seeking new members. If you are interested, go along and see if you would like to join this friendly group. Meetings take place on the third Thursday afternoon of every month at Hallcroft Community Centre, starting at 2.00pm.
