English Civil War Weekend at Sherwood Forest

A snapshot of one of the most volatile and unsettling periods in English history will be played out at Sherwood Forest in July.

The English Civil War, which took place in the mid-1600s, saw supporters of Oliver Cromwell and Parliament in conflict with the Royalist defenders of King Charles I. Nottinghamshire played host to several key events during this turbulent time, and on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th July, the Parliamentary John Bright’s Regiment of Foote will return to Robin Hood’s forest – close to Welbeck Abbey, once a stronghold of Royalist power in August 1644.

In that year, following the Parliamentary victory at the Battle of Marston Moor, the Earl of Manchester began his march southwards, securing Royalist garrisons along the way. Stationed in Worksop, the Earl sent his troops to quarter around Welbeck, the Nottinghamshire seat of the Royalist Earl of Newcastle, before calling for its surrender.

This 2025 reimagining will see a company of Bright’s regiment of Roundheads taking shelter and provisions in Edwinstowe. The question remains: will Welbeck surrender?

Re-enactors from the regiment will bring the era to life with authentic costume and weaponry, performing military drills and manoeuvres. Visitors – particularly children – will have the opportunity to engage with history through hands-on activities and demonstrations.
It promises to be a captivating weekend at Sherwood.

Admission to the event at RSPB Sherwood Forest in Edwinstowe is free, though parking charges apply.
