The very successful February meeting of East Markham WI, when physiotherapist Kate Dixon spoke about how physiotherapy could support all aspects of health and wellbeing – as well as help with pain and mobility issues – prompted many follow-up questions and a request for Kate to return at a future date.
On Tuesday 18th March, members celebrated the 76th anniversary of the WI in East Markham. The Village Hall was beautifully set for a party, which included a buffet provided by The Crusty Cob in Tuxford and raffle. Entertainment followed, provided by the After Eight Quartet – a barbershop, close harmony group – who performed a wide range of well-known songs, interspersed with stories and humour.
The April meeting began with WI business and a call for nominations for the 2025–26 committee. Members are encouraged to consider joining the committee to help shape the WI’s future and continue its success.
The evening continued with an interesting and informative presentation by two experienced volunteers from the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance. Their talk about the organisation’s work across the two counties was followed by questions and the opportunity to browse a sales table, with proceeds supporting their vital services.
April also marked the start of the WI year, with memberships being renewed. The annual fee for 2024–25 is £51.00. Membership includes 11 monthly meetings, each featuring a speaker, demonstration or activity, plus refreshments – equating to just £4.64 per meeting. East Markham WI also organises additional member-only events throughout the year, charged at cost.
Members can access events run by the Nottinghamshire Federation of WIs and the WI Learning Hub, an online platform offering a wide range of free talks, demonstrations and activities. Members also receive WI Life magazine 10 times a year, featuring essential information on WI campaigns and projects alongside craft, cookery, travel, books and puzzles.
On Tuesday 20th May, WI business will be followed by the Annual Meeting, during which reports will be presented, the previous year’s accounts will be submitted for approval, and a new committee will be elected. Members will then nominate their choice of President. After refreshments, there will be a bingo session with prizes and a raffle draw.
On Tuesday 17th June, the speaker will pose the question: ‘Are you bin smart—do you know what can go in the blue bin for recycling?’ A representative from Veolia will explain what can and cannot be recycled, and why. A visit to the recycling plant in Mansfield has been arranged for August, with a sign-up board available at the meeting.
Ladies looking to join a friendly group are warmly invited to attend a monthly meeting as a visitor (fee £6.00) to explore what East Markham WI has to offer. Meetings take place on the third Tuesday of each month at East Markham Village Hall, starting at 7.15pm.
