In December, the Village Hall was dressed for a party, complete with fairy lights, tinsel, a Christmas tree, and decorated tables. After depositing Secret Santa gifts and browsing the beautiful raffle prizes, East Markham WI members were served a welcome drink and a festive meal with a difference – an individual Christmas Dinner Pie.
The pie featured roast turkey with all the trimmings and traditional vegetables wrapped in delicious shortcrust pastry, served with garden peas and gravy, with vegetarian and gluten-free options available.
The dessert table looked wonderful, with fruit salad, cheesecakes, roulades, trifle, pavlova, and cheese and biscuits, all made by members. After dinner, entertainment was provided by Andy Walker, a singer and guitarist, whose wide variety of music and songs encouraged member participation and dancing. The raffle was drawn during the interval, and later in the evening, Secret Santa gifts were chosen.
June gave a vote of thanks to Andy for his wonderful entertainment, and President Alena gave a special vote of thanks to member Val and her helper, another Val, who had made the very tasty Christmas Pie.
Alena thanked everyone for coming and wished members and their families a very Happy Christmas and New Year. The evening ended on a high note, as those remaining danced the night away before it was time to clear away after a very successful and enjoyable evening.
On Tuesday 21st January, local fireman Vince spoke about the work of the fire service and fire safety in the home. Tuesday 18th February will see Kate Dixon encourage members to keep moving with a talk on ‘Mobility in Later Life’. In March, the WI will celebrate 76 years in East Markham.
Visitors and new members are always welcome to the meetings. For more information, contact 07971 291883 or 07802 225999.
