East Markham WI embraced a wintry November meeting despite an early four-inch snowfall. The village hall was prepared with mulled wine warming and plates of mince pies and shortbread ready to serve.

The meeting welcomed Sarah Troop, who demonstrated the art of making traditional Christmas door wreaths. Sarah brought bunches of foliage and willow sticks, showing how to craft a willow circle as the wreath base, then cover it with moss and greenery, all sourced naturally from gardens, walks, or friends. She explained how to arrange the foliage and attach decorations like pine cones, dried orange slices, and Chinese lanterns for colour.

The demonstration culminated in a beautiful wreath, donated by Sarah as the first raffle prize. Louise gave a vote of thanks, expressing hope to improve her own wreath-making efforts. The lucky winner of the wreath was Muriel, who was delighted with her prize. The evening concluded with members enjoying refreshments and browsing Sarah’s festive items for sale.

The December meeting was festive, featuring a unique meal of Christmas Dinner Pie with peas and gravy, followed by an array of desserts. Entertainment was provided by guitarist and singer Andy Walker, who performed a wide selection of music. The evening also included a Christmas raffle with excellent prizes and a Secret Santa exchange. President Alena thanked everyone for their participation and extended warm wishes for Christmas and the New Year.

The upcoming schedule includes:

  • Tuesday 21st January: A talk by a member of the local Fire Brigade on their work and fire safety at home.
  • Tuesday 18th February: Jane Dixon, a physiotherapist, will present ‘Mobility in Later Life’ with simple audience exercises for joint and muscle health.

New members and visitors (£5.00 fee) are welcome. For further information, please contact 07971 291883 or 07802 225999.
