‘Tax, Care and Toy Boys’ was the intriguing title for the September meeting of East Markham WI. Oliver Hill from Coop Legal Services, the evening’s speaker, aimed to remove the mystery surrounding the topic.

He began by asking members if they thought it necessary to make a will, to which the answer was a resounding yes. Acknowledging that everyone should have a will, Oliver posed another question: ‘What are the threats to your assets?

The three main threats discussed were Inheritance Tax, Care Fees, and Second Marriages, with Oliver explaining the current rules and laws applicable to each. He provided insights into whether there are ways to mitigate these threats, affirming that it is possible, provided they comply with current laws and regulations.

Sue B extended a vote of thanks to Oliver. Following refreshments, WI business was conducted. Correspondence from County was read out and suggestions were requested for the 2024-25 programme, covering topics, speakers, and places to visit.

On 24th September, a group of members enjoyed a picnic cruise in warm sunshine along the River Trent aboard the Newark Crusader, a boat with full disabled access operated by a non-profit charity and crewed entirely by volunteers.

As part of its ‘Supporting the Community’ programme, the WI hosted a free Harvest Lunch for village residents on 8th October. This well-attended event allowed attendees to enjoy homemade soup with rolls and butter, followed by homemade cake and tea or coffee. Additionally, a few craft stalls and a raffle in aid of Bassetlaw Food Bank were present. The WI expressed gratitude to local councillors for their support of the event.

The meeting on 15th October welcomed back Paula Bell, who returned to share insights as ‘Being Lady Denman’.

On 19th November, there will be a Festive Floral Demonstration. Visitors (£5.00) are welcome to attend monthly meetings (up to three visits), or individuals may consider becoming members to enjoy access to a varied programme and additional events. Pro-rata rates are available for those joining later in the WI year.

Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at 7.15pm in East Markham Village Hall. For more information, contact either the Secretary at 07971 291883 or Membership at 01777 871567.
