A wet and chilly July day did not dampen the enjoyment of East Markham WI’s second Strawberry Tea. Fortunately, the village marquee provided shelter, and members were kept warm with plenty of blankets and cushions.
Flower-decorated tables set with vintage crockery welcomed the attendees, who were greeted with a glass of fizz. China teapots, jam, and cream were added to the tables before committee members brought out cake stands of scones and strawberries. President Alena welcomed everyone, hoping the unseasonable weather would not diminish their enjoyment of the afternoon.
Following tea, games of Bingo were played, answers to the table quiz were given, and prizes were awarded to the winners. The raffle was drawn, and Secretary Vicky expressed gratitude to all who helped make the afternoon a success and to the members for braving the weather to support the event.
The monthly meeting began with WI business, including discussions on future County events and potential member outings to The Workhouse in Southwell and a trip on the River Trent. Member Jann completed a sponsored Glider Flight in aid of Nottinghamshire Women’s Aid at the Gliding event organised by the County Federation in August.
The evening’s entertainment featured Paul Vickers, a magician. As members enjoyed nibbles and drinks, Paul spoke about the history of magic and how simple tricks were once used to ‘con’ people. With humour and audience participation, Paul demonstrated various card, cup and ball, and rope tricks, explaining some of the techniques behind them. This light-hearted meeting allowed members to socialise while learning about the magician’s art, making for a truly magical evening.
In August, members enjoyed a talk and demonstration on ‘The History of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie’ and in October, costumed speaker Paula Bell will return as ‘Lady Denman’, a WI pioneer and namesake of the now-closed Denman College. Her talk will offer a fascinating glimpse into the life of this influential woman and the early days of the WI.
New members (£48.00, with pro-rata rates) and visitors (£5.00) are always welcome at the monthly meetings. Why not go along and see what this vibrant WI has to offer?
Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at East Markham Village Hall at 7.15pm.
