East Markham WI

April is the start of the WI year, when memberships are renewed and a new programme begins. President Alena welcomed 44 members and visitors and outlined the programme for the meeting of East Markham WI before introducing and welcoming speaker Clive Rudd.

Clive is a guitarist, singer and raconteur, specialising in the music of the 1950s, 60s and 70s. He entertained with a mix of music, songs, stories and jokes. Audience participation was welcomed and soon members were singing along to hits from the past. Val and Michelle were recruited as backing singers, complete with sombreros and mariachis for a very lively Mexican number! Then there was much arm waving during Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline. At one point a short conga line wound around the tables.

This was a light-hearted, enjoyable and fun evening – just the thing to start off a new year. June gave an amusing vote of thanks to Clive.
Business followed the refreshment break. Members voted in favour of the Resolution on ‘Dental Health Matters’. County and National correspondence was outlined; sadly County are to sell Trent Bridge House, which has become too costly to maintain.

Future member events include a visit to Hardwick Hall on 26th June and a Strawberry Tea in Vicky’s garden on 11th July.

The meeting on 21st May was the members only Annual Meeting, where the previous year’s reports were presented, the accounts approved and the new committed elected.

On 18th June, Sue Floyd will be ‘Bess of Hardwick’, telling the fascinating story of Elizabeth Shrewsbury, the builder of Hardwick Hall. The meeting on 16th July will be a ‘Summer Social with Magic’, with Paul Vickers teasing the group with his illusions and tricks.

Visitors (£5.00) and new members (£4.00) are always welcome at monthly meetings on the third Tuesday of the month at 7.15pm in East Markham Village Hall.
