October saw another full house for East Markham WI, with eight visitors joining members to hear member Clare Sobieraj talk of her ‘Journey from Nursing to Reiki Master’.
Throughout her talk Clare gave many anecdotes of her family life and of caring for her mother, who had Parkinson’s and dementia. Providing compassionate care and pain management as part of the healing process of her patients had always been part of Clare’s nursing philosophy and, having retired from full time teaching, she started to look at alternative therapies which may help the healing process.
Lockdown provided the ideal time to study these in depth and she chose Reiki, as it provided a gentle way to help patients manage their pain thus helping the healing progress. Clare studied and obtained the levels required to practice, and after a year she studied further to become a Master of Reiki.
Still involved part-time with Lincoln University in lecturing to students and developing future courses, Clare’s Reiki practice is usually through referrals or word of mouth. She does not charge for her sessions but asks for a donation to a Parkinson’s charity, for which she acts as an ambassador, following the support given by the charity to her mother.
This was a most interesting talk telling of a full life in the caring profession. President Alena gave a Vote of Thanks to Clare and presented her with a gift.
In November members enjoyed a Craft and Social Evening with the opportunity to try their hands at making two Christmas themed items, whilst chatting and partaking of a selection of refreshments. This month’s raffle had some special prizes with all proceeds being donated to Bassetlaw Food Bank.
The December meeting is a member-only Christmas Party. There will be a welcome drink, Pie and Peas and a selection of desserts. Members are welcome to bring their own drink.
There will be a Secret Santa Game; please bring a wrapped gift, value up to £5.00. The game is a variation of Pass the Parcel and no one will leave with the gift they brought. Other games / entertainment are in the final planning stage. Please note, the evening will start at 6.15pm with food service from 6.30pm.
On 16th January, Sue Burton will tell members ‘How to Look Good with Colour’. Sue is an excellent speaker who will demonstrate how different colours can affect the way we look and feel.
