May was East Markham WI’s Annual Meeting when the previous year (April to March) was reviewed, reports submitted and the audited accounts approved by the members. County Advisor, Jane Jefferson BEM was present to conduct the election of the Committee and the President for 2023 – 2024.
Following the election of the committee, nominations were made for President and after a secret ballot the County Advisor declared Alena Usher President.
After WI business and refreshments, former Beefeater, Keith Hanson, gave a fascinating, illustrated talk on ‘The Life and Times of King Charles III’, which included insights into some little-known aspects of his upbringing, learning and interests during the many years he was preparing for the role of monarch. Following questions, Janette B gave a formal vote of thanks to Keith.
Earlier in the month members and friends enjoyed a visit to the Piece Hall in Halifax and a group of members visited County House for an evening of wine tasting and canapés.
In June Dawn Cragg MBE gave a talk entitled ‘From Bamboo to Buckingham Palace’; a report will follow next month.
On 18th July, the Mayflower Pilgrims in the new world is the theme of Maggie Watkins’ talk called ‘Pilgrims and Prophets’. The meeting on 15th August will be something different when Paul Whittaker OBE, tells of his life as ‘The Deaf Singer’.
