East Markham WI

November and December saw several events for members of East Markham WI to enjoy.

On Saturday 12th November the WI provided the refreshment tent at the Milton Mausoleum Craft Fair. Members had baked, shopped and made soup and sandwiches to provide a huge variety of savoury and sweet food, plus hot and cold drinks for stallholders and visitors. The ‘village tent’ provided a seating area, which was much appreciated by customers!

Thanks go to Bob for delivering, putting up and taking down the tent. A new pop-up banner, advertising the WI, had its first outing at this event.

The monthly meeting on the 15th was a craft and social evening, with members able to try their hand at making two small items: an origami box from card or paper and an Omyage drawstring bag made from two fabric triangles.

On Wednesday 16th, family, friends and villagers joined members for a coach outing to the Designer Outlet at York. This was a day for some retail therapy and, judging by the number of bags taken onto the return coach, some serious shopping had been done! Members all agreed that it had been a most enjoyable day, and thanks go to Alena and Janette for organising it.

On Saturday 26th the WI repeated its successful Bric-a-Brac stall at the Church Christmas Fair and ran a ‘Bottle-ola’. There were bargains for all and the chance to win a bottle of something – from baby oil, through cooking oil and shampoo to water or wine.

On 6th December a group of members enjoyed a Christmas Lunch at the Queens Hotel and on the 13th the popular Christmas Wreath-making afternoon took place in the Village Hall.

The WI Christmas Party was on the 20th, where members were welcomed with a drink of their choice, a bring-and-share buffet was served and in a change from previous years there were party games.

The party provided a happy ending to a year of mixed emotions in which the group had celebrated the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II with a Jubilee Tea Party, mourned her passing with a silent tribute and welcomed her son as our new King, Charles III.

The New Year begins with member Louise Kendall talking about her work as a Specialist Heart Nurse and how everyone can look after their heart health. This meeting is on Tuesday 17th January, starting at 7.15pm at the Village Hall. Visitors (£4.00 fee) and new members are welcome to join for what will be an interesting and informative evening.
