East Markham WI

The April meeting was the first of the new membership year at East Markham WI, with members paying their subs and signing up for the group’s upcoming events.

Unfortunately, the evening’s booked speaker, Dawn Cragg MBE, had to cancel at the last minute. President Jenny managed to source a replacement at very short notice; Mike Ogden came along with his talk entitled ‘The Seed of Kings’. With many illustrations, Mike told of how the Royal blood line travelled through some 30-plus generations from King Alfred the Great to our present Queen, Elizabeth II.

There were many twists and turns in the story, which travelled through much of present-day Europe from 900 AD to today, with links established through marriages, wars and various relationships. This was a fascinating tale with too many names and dates to remember, but Mike stated that part of the ‘seed’ of Alfred the Great is present today in many of the crowned heads and nobility of Europe.

WI business followed refreshments, with President Jenny reporting on the Annual Meeting of Notts. Federation of WIs, which she attended as branch delegate. June sold Prize Draw tickets for the National Federation, the branch raffle was drawn and members socialised while examining the information table.

Hypnotherapy was the theme of the May meeting, presented by member Claire C. Members also took part in the River Group evening, where Phil Rylance entertained, and celebrated the Platinum Jubilee of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at a Tea Party in a member’s garden.

June is the month of the Annual Meeting, where the previous year is reviewed, accounts presented and a new committee elected. It is planned to have a display of nostalgia items covering the history of the Queen’s reign and of the Branch from its founding in 1949.

July welcomes Janice Rose Lingerie, a local company, to talk on the importance of measurement for and fitting of bras, for all ages, sizes and shapes including ones for nursing and post-surgery, plus the company’s third world charity work. This will be an open meeting, for all women interested in finding the perfect fit, especially those who have had surgery. The evening starts at 7.15pm on Tuesday 19th July at East Markham Village Hall, Lincoln Road, East Markham NG22 0SS, visitor fee £4.00.
New members and visitors are welcome at all monthly meetings, held on the third Tuesday of the month. Contact 01777 871706 for more information.
