East Markham WI

Members of East Markham WI showed their competitive spirits in February, when they embraced their own Winter Olympics with an evening of curling. Sue Robertson, from the Thursday Curling Group, introduced the indoor form of the game usually played on ice with granite stones.

There was much laughter as those new to the game sent their ‘stones’ careering around the village hall whilst those who played regularly showed how it should be done by getting theirs to land neatly on the target! After all the teams had played each other the scores for each team were added up, with the highest scoring team receiving token prizes.

It was a fun evening, with members having the opportunity to socialise and enjoy refreshments between their turns to play.
Members celebrated 73 years of the WI in East Markham at a Birthday Dinner on 15th March. Due to restrictions this was the first Birthday Dinner since 2019, so there was much to celebrate; a report of the evening will be in the May edition of Retford Life.

The Programme for 2022-23, starting in April, is complete with a wide range of speakers, subjects and events, including something special to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

April is the start of the WI year when membership fees are due, with the fee this year being fixed at £44.00 for 11 monthly meetings. Where else can you have two hours of friendship, learning, fun, laughter and refreshments for £4.00? Payment can be made at the meeting on 15th April when local beauty practitioner, Dawn Cragg MBE, will be talking about her life and work.

New members and visitors (fee £4.00) are always welcome. Contact eastmarkhamsec@nottswi.org.uk or 01777 871567 for more information.
