September is the busiest month of the year for East Markham gardeners, with three noteworthy dates.
The final trading session of the year will take place on Sunday 7th September at the East Markham allotments from 9.30am to 11.00am – a sure sign that autumn and harvest time have arrived.
On Tuesday 9th September, the new season of regular gardening talks begins at East Markham Village Hall at 7.30pm. This first talk will be led by Rachel Barrowcliffe, Head Gardener at The Tropical Butterfly House, Anston. Everyone is welcome to this free event – no membership required.
The third date is the highlight of the local gardening calendar – the Annual Show on Sunday 14th September at East Markham Village Hall. The show will feature flowers, vegetables, fruit, crafts, cooking, preserves, photography and more. Members of the East Markham Gardeners’ Association (EMAGA) can stage entries from 8.30am, with the public exhibition opening at 3.00pm. This long-running village tradition offers free entry, refreshments, and a warm welcome to all. SatNav NG22 0SS.
Looking ahead, East Markham’s busiest day of the year – Apple Day – will be held on Sunday 5th October from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Centred on the Hempsall Heritage Orchard and East Markham Village Hall, Apple Day 2025 will feature free tasting tables, a new recipe book, ‘Pick Your Own’ apples at bargain prices, an Apple Advice Centre, and numerous stalls selling produce, gardening items, and arts and crafts. Children’s activities will include an art competition, while refreshments will range from café treats to pork and apple cobs and a cider bar. Entertainment will run all day, with live music, Morris dancers, steam engines, and a raffle. SatNav NG22 0SS. Free street parking is available, and everyone is welcome.
