Dukeries Soroptimist Club

by | 21 January 2019 | Retford, Social Group, Worksop

Soroptimist International Club of the Dukeries was founded nearly 50 years ago, fundraising for local, national and international charities, particularly those supporting women and girls.  It is a small, friendly group of women, who meet regularly for social activities. The club holds monthly business meetings and also gets together for dinner meetings to listen to a wide range of interesting speakers, talking on some very diverse topics.

Most recently, several of their ladies were on hand to help out at the Christmas Fair at the Priory Church in Worksop on 1st December. Along with other clubs and organisations, members generated funds for this historic building and presented their tree as usual.

On 22nd November, the Club was delighted to welcome The Venerable (Air Vice Marshal) Robin Turner CB DL RAF (Retd) to its dinner meeting at Ye Olde Bell in Barnby Moor. He gave a fascinating talk about his time as chaplain in the Air Force, taking his audience through his journey towards being appointed as Air Vice Marshal.

At an earlier dinner meeting on 25th October, two exceptional young people from Worksop College gave a presentation on their trip to Auschwitz in Poland. The ladies were very interested to hear about their experiences and their perception of this very emotive site. They provided an enlightening insight into the scale of horrors that took place there and the sacrifices made by so many during this period in our history.

Every year the club lays a wreath on Remembrance Day, either in Worksop or Retford. This year two of our members, Christine and Tina, were in attendance at the Cenotaph in Retford to lay the wreath on behalf of the club.
