Would you like to have a go at a new craft/hobby? Excellent tuition is available in local friendly surroundings and at an affordable price.

The Dukeries Community Workshop is a registered charity, run by local volunteers for the community. It is based at the Dukeries Complex in New Ollerton and can cater for all skill levels and abilities, including wheelchair users.

Volunteer tutors are waiting to guide you in the right direction. The workshop is open Monday to Friday during school term, from 9.00am to 3.00pm. Costs are £5.00 per session but may be waived in cases of financial hardship.
There’s always time for a chat and a cuppa while you learn new skills and make new friends. The autumn terms started at the beginning of September and the regular weekly tutored sessions available are:

  • Monday, 9.00am to 2.00pm — Woodcarving
  • Tuesday, 9.00am to 3.00pm — General woodwork and own projects
  • Wednesday, 9.00am to 12.30pm — Own project or short course (see below)
  • Wednesday, 1.00pm to 3.00pm — Art glass session (traditional stained and Tiffany style glasswork and glass mosaics)
  • Thursday, 9.00am to 3.00pm — General woodwork and own projects
  • Friday, 9.00am to 12.30pm — Own project or short courses
  • Friday, 1.00pm to 3.00pm — Kiln glass work

The following short courses are planned leading up to Christmas — these are an ideal opportunity to make a bespoke Christmas gift:

  • An Introduction to Pyrography — creative ‘writing and drawing with fire’
Wednesday 4th October and Thursday 5th October, 9.30am to 12.30pm
Two morning sessions with Mark will give you plenty of time to master the basic principles of this ancient craft, sometimes referred to as “poker work”— then it’s just down to your own imagination. The cost is £7.50 per session inclusive of tools, tuition and materials.
  • Walking Stick Making and Carving
Friday mornings, 9.30am to 12.30pm, starting Friday 6th October
This course will initially be offered over six to eight weeks but this is a flexible time frame. Roy and Bill are both experienced stick makers and carvers and will be guiding you every step of the way. The cost is £5.00 per session plus the cost of materials.
  • Kiln Fused Glass for Xmas
Thursdays, 10.00am to 3.00pm, starting Thursday 9th November
Come and learn how to make your own unique glass decorations with Ann over four Thursdays (bring a packed lunch). The cost is £15 a day and includes a glass starter pack. All tuition, tools and kiln firing is included.

If there is anything else you’d like to have a go at, give Dukeries Community Workshop a call and the volunteers will try and help. Even if they can’t run a course, the current users are only too pleased to share their skills in all aspects of woodworking, from furniture making to children’s toys, lathe turning and jig pattern making. There is a large library full of ideas to give you inspiration and worked examples will also be on hand, so what are you waiting for? Come along and make some truly inspirational and unique items.

Can you help?
The volunteer team is in need of admin assistance to keep the workshop going and they never turn away anyone who has engineering, woodworking or other craft skills and is willing to join the small team of ‘hands-on’ volunteers helping others to develop new skills.
