Cath Ray Gallery and Studios on Bridgegate in Retford is pleased to present a fantastic new exhibition from Saturday 4th May to Saturday 29th June.
Draw My Town is an exhibition of work by Retford artist, Jayne Day Williams, who has produced beautiful, intricate drawings of many local historic buildings, both public, commercial, and domestic, including The Majestic Theatre, The Court House, and all the buildings in our stunning Market Square.
The exhibition also includes many of the buildings on Bridgegate, where the gallery is situated, and buildings designed by the renowned Nottingham architect, Watson Fothergill and his contemporary Mr P Bertram Ogle. Alongside this project, Jayne also draws images straight from her imagination and these ‘doodles’ depict flowing lines of birds and flowers, houses and gardens, as well as grids of shop fronts, people, doorways and windows.
Jayne grew up in Wales and art was always her passion, even though she forged a successful career as a teacher and was a headteacher for 24 years.
On her retirement a few years ago, she found the time and energy to devote to her artwork and the development of her intricate drawing style using graphic marker pens in both black and white, and colour. She sees an important influence on this very precise style in the engineering drawings that she would watch her father produce in his work as a blacksmith.
Many of Jayne’s original drawings will be for sale alongside reproductions and cards, including huge prints of her black and white drawings series of the whole of Retford Market Square. Jayne also takes commissions to draw particular buildings, but there is a fair chance that if your home or business is in Retford town centre, she has already done it!
Jayne will be at the gallery on two occasions during the exhibition to talk to visitors about her work and will be drawing in the gallery as part of the Open Studios Notts events. These will be on the first day of the exhibition, Saturday 4th May, and on Sunday 9th June (10.00am to 4.00pm).
