Bassetlaw councillors have donated thousands of pounds to local community projects as part of the Councillor Community Grants.
Councillor Susan Shaw, Chairman of Bassetlaw District Council and Ward Member for East Retford East, along with Councillor Graham Oxby, Councillor David Pidwell and Councillor Jonathan Slater, have collectively donated £900 to Daneshill Sailing Club.
The grants will help to fund a new safety boat and engine, along with a new launch trailer, that enables the club to offer sailing throughout the year.
Maurice Holmes, Commodore of the Daneshill Sailing Club said: “The club is very grateful for the generosity shown by the councillors. There comes a time where the old boat becomes not fit for purpose. Replacing it would be a very costly endeavour and without donations, we wouldn’t be able to afford the equipment.
“The new boat is an integral part of the safety equipment at the club. We are now on the right track to move closer to our goal with the aid of this donation, which is very much appreciated.”
Sailing activities commenced in Daneshill in 1973 with the club forming in 1988, it now helps introduce people of all ages to sailing.
A group of councillors have donated money to help Retford Lifesavers Club in their quest for medals at the next World Lifesavers Championship in Australia.
The club is aiming to win their first gold medal at the championships since 2018 and will be taking on competitors from 50 countries on the Gold Coast in August and September this year.
Bassetlaw Councillors have donated £2,300, which will help to buy new equipment and contribute towards the championship entry fees for its members.
Councillors including Councillor Harriet Digby, Councillor Malachi Carroll, Councillor John Manners, Councillor David Naylor, Councillor David Pidwell, Councillor Alan Rhodes, Councillor Joan Sanger and Councillor Jonathan Slater all contributed from their community grants.
Thanks also go to Councillor Fraser McFarland, Ward Member for Clayworth, who has donated £1,000 to a trio of social and environmental projects in three villages.
In Clarborough, £300 has been used to provide new litter picking equipment and a bin; In Hayton, £200 has been used to plant two new trees at Hayton Playing Fields, including a new Christmas Tree; while in Clayworth, £500 has been used to buy acoustic curtains for the Parish Hall.
Each Bassetlaw District Councillor is allocated a small budget and has the discretion to award grants to community activities that will benefit the community within their respective electoral ward areas.
