Though there has not been a meeting in Wheatley Village Hall since June, Clays Horticultural Society members have not been without a monthly dose of gardening knowledge. In July, 40+ members visited the RHS’ newest gardens at Bridgewater, Manchester.
It was an easy journey and enhanced by glorious weather; the visit was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The garden is very much a work in progress, being derelict for many years and then its reconstruction being delayed by Covid. As an organised group, members were met by a friendly guide and all issued with a £5.00 voucher to spend in the well-stocked shop.
A follow-up visit in a couple of years’ time would be most interesting as the garden continues its progression towards maturity.
In August, the group had a private opening of Maureen Hayward’s glorious garden at Laneham. Maureen is a most enthusiastic and artistic gardener. Members were enthralled by her ingenious and stylish planting.
The next open meeting is Monday 19th September, when it will be a time to look back at ‘The Way We Were – Gardening 60 Years Ago’, with Doug Stewart. Monday 17th October brings the AGM coupled with a Social Evening.
There are plans for another Open Gardens day next year – Sunday 4th June 2023 – with lots of other exciting meetings and visits in the pipeline so watch this space!
