Celebrating Midsummers Day in Retford with FREE music for all

by | 14 June 2024 | Community Event, Music, Retford

Friday 21st June is the annual Retford Make Music Day.

Local musicians, and some from further afield, will be out and about in Retford throughout the day and evening to entertain everyone, all for free. You will find the event easily in the Market Square, Library and other spots around town.

21st June is the summer solstice when the sun is at its peak. This event celebrates by creating music and dance to share with everyone. As usual, there will be familiar and not so familiar tunes plus dancing, all to banish your worldly cares temporarily and bring a smile to your face. There may even be a group you don’t know about that you might like to join!

So bring along family or a friend or two, especially including those who may find it difficult to get out normally. And don’t forget the young children – they love to see and hear the different instruments. There will be a special session for them in the Library.

Retford Make Music Day is part of the world’s largest annual free music festival.

Taking part will be Rattlejag musicians, North Notts Makaton Choir, Retford Community Singers, Gringley Wall of Sound, Dukes Dandy Step Clog, Retford U3A recorders, the Dukeries and Retford Ukulele groups, Worksop U3A Swing and Steel Bands and others.

There will also be refreshments available at numerous local cafés, some with a Midsummer theme, plus lunchtime and evening pub music sessions at Beer Under the Clock and the Brew Shed.

Groups and soloists are very welcome to have a timed slot and join the celebrations. Buskers are particularly welcome and can just turn up and choose a spot in Carolgate or by the Cannon.

For more information or to book a playing spot, see Facebook Retford Make Music Day or contact Tessa Rolph on 01777 472461.

A more detailed timetable closer to the date will be on Facebook, at the Library and the noticeboard on Spa Road by Poundland, formerly Wilkos.
