After a quiet spell, Worksop Miners Welfare Band is buzzing again under the direction of its new Musical Director, Bob Woffinden. Bob brings fresh energy, enthusiasm, and musical expertise to the role, giving the band a renewed sense of purpose and excitement. Like many community bands, Worksop Miners Welfare has faced challenges in recent years. For a while, the band didn’t have a regular conductor, but a dedicated core of long-standing players kept things going, ensuring rehearsals continued and the music never stopped. The band remains deeply grateful to everyone who supported it during that time, including the previous conductor, who contributed whenever work and family commitments allowed.
Now, with Bob at the helm, the band is looking to the future with confidence and is eager to welcome new members to its friendly, inclusive group. There are current vacancies for two front row cornets, second and third cornets, baritones, Eb and Bb basses, horns, and all trombones. Instruments are available to borrow, and rehearsals take place every Wednesday at 7.30pm at Worksop Miners Welfare. There’s no contesting and no pressure – just good music and great company.
Depending on demand, the band also hopes to launch a training band open to all ages and abilities, perfect for anyone looking to learn or return to brass playing. If you’ve ever fancied picking up an instrument or joining a welcoming local group, now is the perfect time to get involved. Find Worksop Miners Welfare Band on Facebook, or go along on a Wednesday evening to join in. For more information, call 07711 950063.
